Equilibrium is death, because equilibrium means a state of maximum entropy or disorder. Living beings are complex systems that need energy to fight entropy and stay away from a state of thermodynamic equilibrium. The immediate effect of intake of energy by a system at equilibrium is that it is driven away from equilibrium.
