Numerology And Other Rubbish

Numerology And Other Rubbish

Just like Astrology, this Numerology or the bogus idea of changing the first letter of your name, number of letters in your name, adding new letters to your name (or names of your new venture, movie, TV serial etc) to bring ‘good luck’ has gained popularity in the last few years in India. It includes car numbers, house or telephone numbers and so on…

numbers-in-the-bFor example — the name of your new serial is going to be ‘Pagal’ (means ‘mad’ or eccentric). Your numerologist tells you your lucky number is 6. How do you make it? You change the name into ‘Ppagal’ or ‘Paggal’ . Isn’t it interesting? Now you are not just mad, you’re quite mad!

This practice caters to people’s craving to know, influence or improve their future. Soothsayers, horoscopewallahs of all kinds thrive because of this human weakness. In fact our lives are influenced or molded by so many myriads of factors –things, people and happenings– that there cannot be and there has never been any way of   knowing, leave alone changing, one’s future. There can be no magic.

It would be wonderful if the Numerologists themselves explained how exactly their thing works. How anyone’s name can possibly affect the future, or the total of the digits of their dates of birth have anything to do with their good fortune? In fact, it is the claimant’s duty to explain and establish their claim. But they will not do so. On this ground anybody can claim anything. For example - I can say ‘God sent me a message that you would do better if you …’ or ‘I had a dream that you should name your child Gobardhan’. Who can stop me? I do not have to explain! Brahmachari Baba and the ‘Supernatural’ Powers

Part 1 of 2 (Click here for part 2)

From since my childhood I have had the habit of visiting saints and self-proclaimed religious men with ‘superpowers’. It was probably in the year 1964, when I was still in my teens, that I met Balak Brahmacharithrough a friend of mine from Baranagar in Kolkata.

The effects of yoga on our body and some tips on lifestyle

I quote below a few gems from Ramdev’s ‘Yog-sadhana o Chikitsa rahasya’ (Yogic practices and treatment)

  # The ideal time for taking the morning food or breakfast is between 8 and 9 in the morning. It is better to take fruits and light drink. (Page 5)

  # People above the age of 50 years should not eat anything in the morning.

  # The ideal time for taking the morning meal or lunch, is between 11am and 12 noon. One can extend the time up to 1pm. but beyond that is a strict NO. Read the full story

KNOW YOUR GURUS

KNOW YOUR GURUS

This article was written by Prabir Ghosh and Sumitra Padmanabhan

This is the first of a 2-part article. Click Here for Part II.

The program Muqabla on NDTV on January 7, 2006, from 10p.m. to 11.30p.m. showed Prabir Ghosh, the General Secretary of Science & Rationalists’ Association of India face to face with  Swami Ramdev, the latest Guru of India.

The guru, a self proclaimed healer of all diseases could not answer some point blank questions by Prabir. This very popular program conducted by Mr.Debang ended with a challenge thrown by Prabir on behalf of the Rationalists’ Association of India. In this challenge, a patient sent by Prabir has to be cured of his ailment and a bald-headed man selected from Delhi will have to be cured of his baldness by growing hair on his scalp; both by using Ramdev’s Yogic therapy and not by using any modern medicine or skin-grafting etc.

No. Ramdev-ji did not accept the challenge. Read more about this “guru” is Prabir’s own words.
