Organized Religion

The Saffronisation Of Karnataka

It is a tragedy that while the developed world is talking of a society based on human values, we the people of Karnataka have to go back to religious texts for our value systems. During the past few years, after the Bharathiya Janatha Party formed their first government in the South, they have been trying to impose their superstitions on the population in the most blatant manner. The machinery of the state is being shamelessly used for this purpose under the guise of education and such high-flown labels. The process is taking place in such an orderly manner and the target is the younger generation. As it is the Chief minister is not known for a leaning towards rational thinking. In fact, he has been utilising the resources of the state to promote religious institutions through sly actions by hook or crook.

The first thing he did on getting elected was to go around the maths and temples spending public money on rituals and donations to these places. During each budget huge amounts have been allocated as ‘grants’ to these institutions under the guise of education and development. That the expenditures of these are not under the scrutiny of any public authority must be one reason for this. These do not even call for tenders for their expenditure and everything is done in an arbitrary manner at the whims and fancies of the heads. The communalisation has increased to the extent that even the midday meals schemes are in the grip of these vested interests. When, eggs were proposed as a dietary supplement for children there was an uproar and the scheme was dropped due to opposition from the math heads who were against. The nutritional needs of the children was sacrificed to pander to the whims and fancies of these so called religious heads. The midday meal schemes are now being slowly taken over by a cult called as ISKCON– The International Society for Krishna Consciousness. These midday meals which were to be cooked in the schools and served hot to the children are being now taken over by this cult who are gradually ensnaring more and more schools into their web. This activity is being fully encouraged by the state government in the guise of serving quality food. This is creating unemployment among the locals who had originally been brought in for this specific job of preparing food for the children. But, it is also a sly way to bypass the caste problem! The food at ISKCON is supposedly cooked by the “upper caste” Brahmins only! It is also an underhanded way of spreading Hindutwa by making children recite shlokas in Sanskrit thanking Hindu gods for providing food paid for by taxpayer money in a secular democracy!

Not content with this level of communalisation in public life, there have been some recent happenings that are worsening the situation. Last month there was conflict between the present and immediate past Chief Ministers. They made contradictory statements about a particular incident and each one stuck to his guns and said that his was the truth. Instead of letting the electorate or a court of law decide, they chose to settle the dispute in the presence of a deity at a place called Dharmastala near Mangalore. The present Chief minister, Yaddiyurappa issued ads in many news papers costing millions to the state treasury, that a trial for truth would be held at the designated place on a particular date. When there were protests about the misuse of public money to settle personal scores, the cost of the ads was borne by the party, or rather, that was what was announced in public. The much awaited confrontation was a damp squib, literally as well as figuratively. The former was due to the pouring rain and the latter due to the fact that the conflicting parties arrived at the temple at different times! One gets a doubt as to why this confrontation did not take place. It is suspected that it was at the insistence of the owner of the temple who requested them not to politicise a temple that was held in reverence by millions of people. The deity of this place is allegedly so powerful that any one who utters an untruth in his presence would die soon after vomiting blood. With two parties making exactly opposite statements it was imperative that one of them would have to face that terrible fate! If that did not happen, the powerlessness of the deity would have been exposed! So, one does get a doubt as to why the whole thing was called off! This was a situation where one of the parties had to be right and obviously the other had to be wrong! The presiding deity would have been forced to show his powers by punishing one of them!

The BJP govt in Karnataka, or rather the Yaddiyurappa dispensation, has survived largely due to the interference by the swamis of the various maths. Whenever there was some talk about his removal they used to spring to his rescue and warn the RSS leadership about touching him. He has already shown his gratitude to them by granting huge amounts, allegedly for social service activities! What better way to repay them than by ensuring that he stays in office. He has takan back many important decisions based on their dictats too! Very recently, the land acquisition notice for the phase of the SEPZ for Mangalore was withdrawn not because of any other reason but by the threat of the Swami of Pejawar math to go on a fast unto death if that was not done! There have been numerous irregularities in the notification and the protests have been going on since long. But, we are told that what clinched the issue was this threat of a fast unto death. The same has happened in another case at Gadag where land was to be taken over for a project by the multinational POSCO. There were protests from those who were going to lose their land. But, nothing much moved until the Swami of a local math called Tontaradhya math got into the picture. Within days, the order for taking over the land was withdrawn and even those who were in favour of handing over their lands to this company were asked to seek the ‘blessings’ of this swami before they did so.

More recent of these controversies is the teaching of Bhagawad Gita in schools for all the children. It is the project of one swami that has now been given the sanctity of a government project, all the time the ministers and party functionaries saying that it is not so. Students, regardless of their religious affiliations or lack of one, are all supposed the learn what is called the ‘essence’ of the Gita. The fact that it is a religious tract being followed by only one section of society has been ignored here. What is important here is that India is secular and the state cannot support any religious activity. All these things are being merrily carried on by a government elected by the people by the due process of democracy!

So, in Karnataka it is these maths and swamis who are ruling the state! The Yaddiyurappa government is a tool in their hands. All decisions have to be taken at their level and then passed by the government which is only a rubber stamp! The so-called cabinet is busy lining their own pockets, trying to save their chairs from allegations of corruption.  Anyway this reminds one of the system of the Roman Catholic Church- everything they need from the institutions run by the religious set-up needs a letter from the parish priest when it concerns a Roman Catholic! That could be anything from a medical appointment to a seat in an educational insitution! Most of the time this is applicable to all facilities that belonged to them even though the education institutions are government funded! These criteria are, however, not applicable to non-Catholics! This system is used to divide the world into ‘them’ and ‘us’. But, Yaddiyurappa and co. have been generous. Their dictats have been applied to all the people of Karnataka!

About the author

Narendra Nayak

  • Well written article, but “Saffronisation” is too mild a word. The sanctimonious humbugs in BJP and religious mutts have ensured “Criminalisation and Wholesale Corruption” of public life in Karnataka. The Karnataka of today resembles the Bihar of the past. The whole world must be laughing at the State. Everything the people of the state accomplished over the years by dint of their toil has been undone by unscrupulous politicians. It is a sad thing to see these fellows flying at public expense to visit temples for divine help. Nero fiddling while Rome burned?

    • I do agree with you. But, since I am presenting the issue from the rationalist angle, I have used that term that is all. Yaddi and co have sold the state for a few piece of silver.

  • But the BJP is not alone in plundering the state. Non-Saffron parties have eclipsed the BJP in looting the national exchequer, be it the Congress or the DMK. Laloo Prasad started the brazen “fodder” scam which has now been overshadowed by the 2G and Mining scams. Santosh Hegde is a man Karnataka should be proud of, the rest being unctuous and servile HMVs. Keep at it, Mr.Nayak.

  • The “Saffron” poison started in India when Hindu society was devided into 4 castes.Division creates Conflict. The initial four splintered in to a tthousand castes and thousand conflicts. One ‘Krishna’ from the epic was inducted into the Holy-Book, promoted to Divinity to get the sanction for their [Vaidic Purohiths] evil deeds. Then 60- 70 years back a group of Maharastrian Brahmins led by Golwalkar laid the foundation for R.S.S to create insecurity among Minorities, which culminated in division of the country. Mr. Narandra Nayak, I feel, should concentrate & channalise his energy to educate the youth of his own District, particularly the youth of the two prominant castes of that area, namely Bunts Community and Gouda–Saraswath community Then the whole South Kanara Dist can hope to be a model to other areas of Karanataka. This requires aggressive propaganda by youth leaders and Internet–Activists.

  • What r u talking about!!! Do u propose to offer eggs to children. Children who are the future of the country led to eat other animals. I don’t know the politics of Karnataka. But ISKCON comprises people of different castes. One of the attendants of Bhagvad gita lecture is of caste different from Brahmans. Castes are created according to the Guna(Qualities) and Karma (actions of a person). If ISKCON is distributing prasadam free of cost then that would be termed as Good Charity that Krishna talked about in Bhagvad gita which is different from giving a coin or two to beggars who will involve in unsanctimonious works such as consuming wine or eating flesh of helpless and innocent animals. Let the cooks in those school become devotees and let them cook for school hence become righteous and will get job

    • My comment is about the "PLAYLISTS"a) they appeared on the left side of the screen in alphabetical order. Now something happened and they were all mixed. I would like to have the same order back.b) Whey can´t we chose the order of the videos within a specific playlist as before. This device disappeared. It was very useful. Please, consider this 2 questions. Thanks, Leo

    • It is shame on the part of karnataka BJP government for introducing Bhagavatgita in all schools in karnataka state. What does Bhagavatgita contain? It says that supernatural energies (god, soul)are the causes of all existence (universe and life)? It is very old fact that only physical energy [mechanical energy including sound, heat, light, electricity, magnetism including gravity]can only do all works and not even a single event is proved to have supernatural cause. Still Hindutva preachers are claiming that god and soul are true with out having any proof / evidence. What does it mean? The spreading of proof less beliefs (superstitions)by the karnataka safron government reveals that these government is working not for welfare and good of people and moreover it is spoiling whole karnataka society using Hindu religion. If one follows one’s religious beliefs at home, no body will have objections. But when one forces others to study his religious scriptures and follow his religion, what the persons belonging to other religions or non religion were to do ? Every person living on the earth will have absolute right make to choice wheather to follow or not to follow any religion, but no body has right to impose his religion on others forcebly. If Hindus forces others to believe vedas – bhagavatgita- ramayana- mahabharat using power or money, it is not wrong to burn the hindu religious texts to ashes. If christians forces others to believe their bible using power or money, it is not wrong to burn bible to ashes. If muslims forces others to believe their Quran or hadis using power or money, it is not wrong to burn Quran or hadis to ashes. Only secularism which advocates seperation of state and education affairs from religion and physicalism which asserts on the Science Causes for everything excluding proof less supernatural causes (astrology, god, soul, vastu, divine miracles etc)only are believable and follow-able in this world. We should live as good humans and not as religious idots who keep the religion label as identification.
